Black Cliffs Honored for Brewing Excellence in American Stout
Boise, ID • September 22—Boise Brewing received a bronze medal at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition. Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the largest commercial beer competition in the world and recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. The top three winners in the competition’s 102 beer-style categories were announced September 22 at the Great American Beer Festival awards ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado.
Boise Brewing was recognized in the American Stout beer-style category for its Black Cliffs, a roast-y, hoppy treat. It is well balanced with rich chocolate and coffee tones and plentiful Northwest hop character. Pine and citrus aromas play well with the dark malt aromas and the body and mouth feel are all a stout should be. This was brewed as our first Community Supported Beer and still one of Lance’s favorites.

The 2018 GABF competition winners were selected by an international panel of 293 expert judges from 8,496 entries, received from 2,404 U.S. breweries, plus 101 Pro-Am and 49 Collaboration entries.
“The 32nd edition of the GABF competition yielded a remarkable turnout of the country’s most exemplary beers,” said Chris Swersey, competition manager, Great American Beer Festival. “I’m continuously impressed by contenders’ talent and passion and would like to extend congratulations to this year’s winners for their excellence in brewing.”

Nestled in the heart of downtown Boise, “halfway between the campus and the capital,” Boise Brewing is the only community owned brewery in Idaho. Now with over 450 owners holding stock in the company, they are looking to expand the notion of “community supported beer”. Recently awarded a gold medal in the World Beer Cup Awards 2018 for their Black Cliffs American Style Stout they are staying true to their commitment to quality as their geographic reach gets longer. National Cyber Security Alliance
Government, Business and Cybersecurity Leaders Gather at
CyberSecure My Business™ Workshop
Boise, ID July xx, 2018 ‒ The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), a nonprofit public-private partnership focused on helping all citizens stay safer and more secure online, is coming to the Boise Metro Area with its CyberSecure My Business™ workshop to teach businesses best practices for securing their company data and share resources available to help.
With over 100 people planned to attend, the event takes place on Tuesday, July 24th from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott Boise West/Meridian (Coronado Ballroom) located at 1789 South Eagle Road in Meridian. It is part of a national tour of workshops designed to generate much-needed cybersecurity awareness, targeted to the country’s vulnerable small and medium-sized businesses. The morning will feature an interactive workshop educating attendees on how to improve employee and business cybersecurity.
Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are gaining the attention of hackers. SMB’s represent 54% of the nation’s economy, according to the SBA. According to the 2018 Verizon Data Breach Report, 58% of targets within their study of over 53,000 incidents identified as small businesses. Furthermore, the BBB found that more than half of small businesses would be unprofitable within a month if they were to lose permanent access to their essential data.
With this top of mind, NCSA created a workshop designed to help small businesses learn to be safer and more secure online in language they can understand. Utilizing the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework, content from federal agencies like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the most recent threat data, NCSA educates smaller organizations on how to think about cybersecurity and offers real-life scenarios along with steps they can take to better secure their data. The NIST Cybersecurity Framework offers an impactful way to engage businesses by assisting them to envision how cybersecurity applies to their individual needs and provides a pathway to better cybersecurity practices both immediately and as their businesses grow.
“Cybersecurity is a critical issue for small businesses. This seminar is designed specifically to help Idaho’s small and medium-sized businesses understand security and provide foundational information to build a cybersecurity strategy tailored to meet their needs,” said Jeff Weak, Director of Information Security, Office of Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter.
During each workshop, an NCSA-trained facilitator leads the attendees through the following steps:
● Understanding the data assets they have that cyber criminals might want to steal
● Learning how to protect those assets without having to spend a lot of money or time
● Detecting when something has gone wrong
● Knowing how to react quickly and appropriately to make the impact as small as possible and understanding the need to create a plan of action that can be implemented when a breach occurs
● Learning what resources are needed to recover after a breach
The content is developed to be easily understood by people who do not have technical backgrounds. Attendees learn about generating a business inventory list and policy document, the necessity of employee training, and the importance of creating recovery plans. Some of these materials are used during the workshop and others are important reference materials for future use. Attendees leave the workshop with a better understanding of the threats and tools to better secure their company data.
“Through our research, we have learned that many business owners are unaware that if a cyber-attack results in a substantial loss to their finances, the bank is not responsible to cover losses. The burden of proof lies with the business,” said Tyler Andrew, BBB Northwest + Pacific, CEO. “This is why BBB is committed to supporting, educating and empowering business owners on the best practices for keeping their companies safe from attacks.”
Registration to the event is free and open to the public, but space is limited. “We want to thank MediaPRO and Trend Micro, our Contributing National Sponsors, and all our partners in advance for helping to make the event a success,” said NCSA Executive Director Russ Schrader.
Featured, are guests from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission; U.S. Small Business Administration, Office of Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter, and Idaho Attorney General’s Office. Community partners include; Idaho Small Business Development Center Network, Better Business Bureau Northwest + Pacific, Idaho Technology Council, Boise Metro Chamber, Caldwell Chamber of Commerce, & Buy Idaho.
To register visit for the event, please visit https://cybersecuremybizboise.eventbrite.com or email Karen@staysafeonline.org. To learn more about staying safe online and to find links to websites that offer additional account security information, visit www.staysafeonline.org.
After the morning workshop on the 24th, the National Cyber Security Alliance’s Director of Small Business Education, Daniel Eliot, along with the Idaho Small Business Development Center and the Better Business Bureau Northwest + Pacific, will head to downtown Boise for a walking tour, where they’ll visit small businesses along the 8th street business corridor, between Front and Bannock, handing out free camera covers and providing businesses with short cybersecurity briefings, including NCSA’s Lock Down Your Login tips.
NCSA is the nation's leading nonprofit, public-private partnership promoting cybersecurity and privacy education and awareness. NCSA works with a broad array of stakeholders in government, industry and civil society. NCSA's primary partners are DHS and NCSA's Board of Directors, which includes representatives from ADP; AT&T Services Inc.; Bank of America; CDK Global, LLC; Cisco; Comcast Corporation; ESET North America; Facebook; Google; Intel Corporation; Logical Operations; Marriott International; Mastercard; Microsoft Corporation; NXP Semiconductors; Raytheon; RSA, the Security Division of EMC; Salesforce; Symantec Corporation; Visa and Wells Fargo.
